How is it different from other biomes?
It's known for
- having permafrost, water in the soil stays frozen for more than two years in a row because of the extreme cold.
- receiving a little amount of sunlight. During the winter, it can stay in total darkness for up to 2 months. During the summer, the sun is out all day, but the it doesn't allow a lot of light.
- having a layer of low-growing plants beneath the snow.
- being treeless.
- snow melting to form swallow bodies of water during the summer.
What do we use it for?
![Picture](/uploads/2/4/0/7/24072630/206192400.jpg)
- recreational activities (backpacking, photography, hunting)
- scientific study
- living
- Oil and gas drilling
- Mining
Recent changes to it?
- Global warming is melting the permafrost layer, which releases methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and it causes the soil to sink (subside) which damages human structures in the cities on the tundra.
- Human activity in oil drilling sites and mines causes damage to the soil and plants and takes a few centuries for the plants to start growing again.
